SU vs Trinity

February 9, 2003

The intense battle for the top spot between Texas' two National Liberal Arts schools was settled on the lacrosse field Sunday afternoon. The result: Southwestern is better! The Bucs offense exploded due the stellar play by the defense to walk away with a 16 to 9 victory.

The Trinity Tigers who came out roaring (and wearing plaid kilts with striped Where's Waldo socks, mind you) on a beautiful 66 degree weather day- were out numbered, out played, and out classed. Returning to their humble living quarters in San Antonio with their tales between their legs and their roars having been muffled to low growls.

If I had to say what brought on the inspired play by our new team, I'd pick three things. 1) The unparalleled verbal support from our faithful fans (though the REFS didn't like it much)Š.2) Aileen's leapord sunglasses that, personally, always get me fired up; and 3) Lisa Kay's colorful choice of shorts to wear under her kilt- that both fans and teammates were treated to viewing during both pre and post game ceremonies!

The first half was a battle, no doubt about it. Team members from last year were having flashbacks from last year's brawl that came down to the closing minutes. The first 30 minutes of our game this year looked much the same with the lead switching hands 4 times. With about 4 minutes left in the first half the Bucs lead a small charge that broke a 4 to 4 tie to go into the half leading 7 to 4.

Trinity came out determined to tie the game back up, and did just that very quickly. The Bucs were getting steamed and Erin McConn stepped up and had two HUGE goals back to back that swung the momentum back to our side, for good. With Coty Maypole denying any Trinity shot trying to find the back of the net- the offense had a hay day. They controlled the ball, made gorgeous give and goes pay off, and effectively wore down the Tiger defense, scoring 7 goals in the final 10 minutes of play. Offensive contributors for this game included: Heather Martin (5), Ginny Calloway (2), Erin McConn(2), Allie McDonald (2), Brittany Kornmann (2), and Cauley Cullum.

With our defense, mid field, and offense playing the way it did in the closing parts of the last half- the Southwestern Women's Lacrosse team now knows they can compete and beat any team in this Texas league.

One hell of a team performance. Watch out UT and A&M, the Pirates of Southwestern are here to do one thing and one thing alone...Buc you up!
