SU vs. Baylor February 8, 2003
Driving up to the field Saturday morning for our first Texas Women's Lacrosse League game of the year; fans and players alike were greeted by two images rarely seen on the fields of play in Central Texas: snow and bows.
The first of the two we welcomed- with a few pre-game snow ball fights and cool team pictures. The latter- the unexplained phenomenon of hair accessory choice by the Baylor Bears- only gave us another reason to push for victory. Beat the bows out of Baylor!
Due to Baylor's preparation for our meeting by participating in UT's pre- season tournament the week before, they had a slight edge on us coming in. This was the first time our team had played a game this spring, and the first real glimpse of what our inaugural season might have in store.
The Bucs went out strong with Allie McDonald striking first and leading the charge that came to a quick 42 lead. Baylor called a time out and some adjustments were made that prompted a 6 goal run by the Bears over the next 15 minutes that took them into the half leading 84.
At the half the Bucs regrouped and refocused. With the snow melted and the game on the line- the offense took advantage of a goalie change to score four points in a row and remind Baylor of the team that beat them in last year's scrimmage. Heather Martin had three of her five goals in the game in the second half and such play even drew an impressive response by the valuable Baylor goal keeper. "That girl is a banshee!"
The game was a fight to the finish, but the first half Baylor run became too much for the Bucs to recover from. The offensive scoring was well balanced due to great transition lacrosse and unselfish plays. Other scoring contributors not already mentioned were: Brittany Kornmann (1), Caulley Cullum (1), and Ginny Calloway (2). The defense held strong that final half with impressive physical play and a lot of heart.
Oh yeah- one more thing. Baylor might have walked away with the win, but we walked away with the Baylor bow (way to go Banshee)! I couldn't have been prouder ;)
