Southwestern vs. trinity University: Recap | March 24, 2002 (L, 12-9)

Lady Bucs lose close one to Trinity The women's Lacrosse team traveled down to San Antonio to take on the Trinity Tigers on Sunday to play its last game in what has become an improbable seminal season.
Heading into the contest 3-0, and having already beaten one-time nationally ranked Baylor, SU has realized much more success than it could have ever hoped for in its inaugural season.
With temperature in the low 80's and only one sub for the game, SU knew it had its work cut out. Trinity wasted no time showing the Bucs it meant business, as they travelled down off the opening draw and scored twice before SU knew what hit it.
The rest of the half went back and forth as Ginny Calloway scored her only goal of the day, Brittany scored and Heather scored as well. SU traded goals and played catch up the entire first half until right before the clock ran out. As the half ended, SU had fought its way to a 6-5 lead, and felt pretty good about its chances.
The second half, however, started with the same fury from Trinity that the first half showed. Before SU was able to take a breath, Trinity had scored four to make it a 9-6 game. SU continued to play hard, and got within two goals several times in the second half, but was never able to get any closer.
As the game wound down, Trinity did an exceptional job of gaining control of loose balls, controlling draws, and beating the tiring Bucs in transition. Trinity earned a 12-9 decision, and simply outplayed SU in the second half.
SU did have several chances at critical points in the game to turn things around in their favor, but could not capitalize. The Lady Bucs had 6 free shots on goal and were only able to capitalize on one the entire day against the Trinity goalie. Late in the game, the ladies were also unable to find open teammates as they were often double and triple teamed.
Despite the loss, however, the ladies played a great game and had an unbelievable season. Next year, with only one senior graduating and with a roster that had only one other upperclassmen, the Lady Buc's are poised to make their mark in the league with their first full season of games.
Erin McConn and Heather Martin led the team in scoring for the game. Ally McDonald notched her second goal of the year, with a rocket in the top right corner, and Mandy Shelton continued to play exceptional defense against some of Trinity's best offensive threats.
Coty Maypole is only going to build on an already promising goalie career, and with a few more practices and offensive scheming, the team should be able to put in a good showing at the Fall A&M tourney next year in preparation for the season.
A big thanks goes out to all the SU fans who made the trip to San Antonio to watch the women play. We know we can continue to count on your support next year.
