Southwestern vs. Austin College: Recap | February 23, 2002 (W, 9-5)

Lady Bucs win first ever home game!

The SU Women's Lacrosse team picked up where it left off in its first ever game and win over Baylor three weeks earlier. El Fuego!

In front of an enormous crowd to see the first SU women's lacrosse game, Southwestern came out early and never looked back. Ginny Calloway, who scored the game winner against Baylor, came out and notched two quick goals early on to get the ball rolling. After the initial hype, however, the Lady Bucs had a mental letdown as Austin College showed some spirit to come back and tie the game at two.

From that point on, the team played with great intensity and took control of the game. McConn, Kornmann, and Martin all scored in a convincing 9-5 win. The team played well in the transition area, keeping the ball on the Buc's offensive side for most of the second half.

Ally McDonald again did very well on draws, and Coty played a solid game in goal. The team cleared the ball very well, getting into the offensive zone very quickly.

Defensively, everyone did a great job of shutting down the offensive threats of Austin College, while picking up ground balls very efficiently. Beth Kilker, Evelyne Orlander, and Genevieve Pruneau all did a great job on the wings and in transition.

The lady Bucs moved to 2-0 in their inaugural season and found out that they won by forfeit over the SFA Lumberjacks before this weekends game. With a 3-0 record going into their last game of the season, the Lady Bucs hope to finish the season perfect against the Lady Tigers of Trinity in San Antonio after Spring Break.

The team deserves a lot of credit for its hard work and dedication. Its success on the field has been apparent. The team would like to thank all the people who have supported them during this inaugural season, and is sure this is the start of a very long and successful tradition at SU.
