SU
Women's Lacrosse starts with a BANG!
The Women's Lacrosse team travelled to Baylor on Sunday to play its
first game ever, and wasted no time making history with a come from
behind win in the second half against one of the better teams in the
league.
The first half revealed that SU had never played a game before, as Baylor
quickly scored a couple of goals, and consistently outhustled SU to
every ground ball.
A 30 yard pass over the defense from Ginny Calloway to Brittany Kornmann
led to the first goal and assist in SU Women's Lacrosse history. As
the half went on, the women settled down and by halftime, were only
down 4-1.
A quick strategy talk and a couple of changes on the field, and the
women were ready to give Baylor a run for their money. The second half
belonged to Southwestern, allowing only one goal and outplaying Baylor
in every facet of the game. Although it was only the second half of
lacrosse the team had ever played, it looked like they had been playing
for years.
Heather Martin, 2nd home from Bowie High school, scored four of the
six goals for Southwestern, three of those in the second half as SU
came storming back. Two big reasons why SU played so well in the second
half, were because of our goalie play by Coty Maypole, and our ability
to win almost every draw thanks to newcomer Ally McDonald.
Coty, in her first game ever as a goalie, played like a seasoned veteran
in goal and made great outlet passes to our attack wings in the second
half as she got more comfortable. At one point, with the sco
re
tied at 5, Coty made a point blank stop on a one on one that helped
to keep the momentum in SU's favor.
Ally McDonald, thrown into the "faceoff" or draw duties only
this week, came in, and after a discussion with the ref on which side
she should be able to face, won every facoff in the second half. The
rest of the team picked up on the energy, by tenaciously going after
ground balls, and doing whatever it took to win the game.
With a little over 4 minutes left in the game, Ginny Calloway took an
outlet pass at midfield and ran past several defenders before placing
a perfect bounce shot past the goalie for SU's first lead of the game.
The goal ended up being the winning goal as SU was able to maintain
possession and control the ball for almost the entire remaining four
minutes, with a great job on ball control by Brittany in the attacking
area as time ran out.
The defense played an exceptional game, with MandyShelton, Sara Emslie,
and several other players shutting down any offensive threat Baylor
tried to mount in the second half.
This was a great way to start a program, and is sure to be the beginning
of great things to come for the girls as they continue to learn the
game and come together as a team. To a person, every girl on the team
made a big play at some point to help SU win the game. A total team
effort, the girls enthusiastically invite all of the SU community to
come out and experience the first ever Women's lacrosse game at SU at
11a.m. on February 23rd against Austin College during Parent's Weekend.
For those that trravelled up to Waco to cheer the team on, a big thanks
for the support. We hope to see you on the 23rd.
