Southwestern vs. Rice (2/6/00)
Minus one person out with the flu, for the first time all year, the team had
everyone available to play against Rice, a Southern Division rival of the
SWLA. Southwestern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, inspired
by the "out of body" play of goalie Nick Sortin. Rice took three times as
many shots as Southwestern, but Nick stopped virtually everything. The MVP
of the game, kept it close for Southwestern into the second half , finally
falling to Rice 12-8.
Once again, the defense, anchored by "hurt" Hurtado and a couple of
freshman, playing better each game, held its own, and forced Rice into many
unsettled situations, and numerous ground balls.
The offense was led by Zach Beaty, who plans on signing his new shoe
contract this week after his stellar performance and goal while literally
flying through the air.
Overall, the game was close the entire day, thanks to the defense and the
great play of our goalie. We never stopped playing, and offensively had
moments of brilliance. Next week we host UT, one of the best teams in the
nation. With everyone healthy, we plan on playing a tough physical game in
preparation for Parent's Weekend the following week.
