The
purpose of Allies is
quite simple. Those involved in the organization wish to identify
themselves as individuals who are willing to learn to provide a safe
haven, a listening
ear and support for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.
This,
in no way, connotes that those that have not chosen to participate in
training
are not "safe" or allies to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender
people. This is just one way for people willing to support and stand up
for the
GLBT community and continue their education.
You are the history! This is a program that takes different forms on
different
campuses. At Southwestern University (SU), it was originally known as
the
"Safe Space" program, initiated in 1995. The program introduced a
one-time
training, called an Advance, much like that done today in Allies. We
hope
to develop the Allies to such a level that there is continued
programming
such as additional Advances (planned by the student, faculty, and staff
committee), continuing education programs for Allies members and
members
of the university, and a more visible gay, lesbian, and bisexual
network
for the SU campus. The program will become what we make of it.
Any person who is willing to attend an Allies Advance is welcome to do
so.
The Advance is a 2-hour, interactive workshop where participants learn
about
issues affecting the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
After
completion of an Advance, participants will receive a placard
indicating
their involvement in the program to display in their residence or
workplace.
Advances are held at various times throughout the year. For more
information,
see the membership list below.
Article I-Name
The name of this organization shall be the ALLIES of Southwestern
University.
Article II-Purpose
The ALLIES organization exists with the intention of providing visible,
tangible support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, and
questioning
(LGBTQ) members of the community. Specifically, the group purposes are:
(a) To provide all students, faculty, and staff with an avenue to
demonstrate
their support and acceptance of LGBTQ people;
(b) To promote educational opportunities for students, staff, faculty,
parents and alumni which will enhance understanding of the diversity of
individuals;
(c) To develop a broad appreciation for diversity and inclusiveness
through promoting understanding of the LGBTQ communities and of their
contributions
to the university community;
(d) To increase the awareness of discrimination and harassment on the
bases of sexual orientation or affectional preference and actively
attempt
to overcome subtle and pervasive oppression and insensitivity;
(e) To support and promote the inclusion of LGBTQ issues in the
university
culture and its institutions, process and structure;
(f) To help find and promote funding opportunities for ALLIES efforts,
including programming, conference attendance, scholarships, etc.;
(g) To provide access for students to specific individuals ("safe
places
and safe people") and forums for confidential discussion, support and
resource
information.
Article III-Membership
Membership in ALLIES is open to all members of the Southwestern
University
community, including students, faculty, and staff who have attended an
Ally
Advance. The membership of ALLIES shall consist of all those eligible
who:
(a) List themselves
on the ALLIES website as available to fulfill Article II (g), and/or
(b) Attend ALLIES meetings.
The
organization shall be
run as a collective composed of all ALLIES members. A quorum at a
collective
meeting shall consist of those attending; decisions shall be reached my
discussion
and consensus.
Regular
business meetings
will be held monthly during the fall and spring semesters, at a time
and
place designated by the president.
Article IV-Elected Positions
The organization shall be run as a collective composed of all ALLIES
members. A quorum at a collective meeting shall consist of five voting
members. The collective shall elect by simple majority, a treasurer,
public relations
representative, meeting facilitator, and a program chair.
Article V-Duties of the Elected Positions
In the spring each year, the collective shall elect by simple majority of those present:
Required
Positions - a president
Optional Positions - a treasurer; a public relations representative; a
program
chair; and any other positions which may be desired.
Those
elected shall serve
for the following academic year.
Treasurer - The treasurer has the duty of overseeing the finances of the collective. Each year, the treasurer must submit a budget to Student Organizational Committee for approval. The treasurer will accept budget proposals from the collective and will then prepare a finalized budget. The treasurer will, with prior approval from the collective, oversee all requests for funding, submit all reimbursement requests, and will keep records of all emoluments and expenditures.
Public Relations Representative(s)- The public relations representative (PR rep) has the responsibility of communication with members of the media as the official voice of the organization. The PR rep has the duties of maintaining the ALLIES website and of coordinating all advertising.
President - The president shall act as coordinator for all collective meetings as well as maintain a listserv to communicate with all members upcoming events and current issues. IF other offices are vacant, president assumes and/or delegates all other duties.
Program Chair- This chair
may plan "ice-breakers" and other reflective activities to open all
regular
business and discussion meetings. The program chair will oversee
planning
and execution of all events sponsored by ALLIES.
Article VI-Service of Elected Members
a. All elected members have the responsibility of attending all
collective
meetings. If an elected member is unable to attend a meeting, she or he
should notify the meeting facilitator in advance.
b. If it should be the opinion of the collective that an elected member
is not fulfilling the obligations of that position, any member of the
collective
may move for removal of that elected member. In order to remove that
elected
member, two-thirds of the members present at the meeting must support
the
motion. Should the motion pass and the elected member be in attendance,
the motion is effective immediately and the elected member will be
replaced
by a member of the collective either permanently or until a permanent
replacement
is found. Should the motion pass, and the elected member not be
present,
a 'good faith' effort shall be made to notify the elected member,
thereby
allowing a response before the next meeting. If, however, after a 'good
faith' notification has been made, the elected member doesn't respond,
the
passed motion will be effective by the end of the next business
meeting.
c. An elected member may at any time resign the position by
notifying the
collective. In the event of the vacancy of an elected position,
another
member of ALLIES may volunteer for the position.
Article
VII - Amendment of
Constitution
This
Constitution may be
amended by the following process:
(a) Proposed amendment(s) shall be submitted to the President.
(b) The President shall publish the proposed amendment(s) on the
listserv,
announcing the time of the business meeting at which the amendment(s)
will
be considered.
(c) A two-thirds majority of the members attending the designated
meeting
is needed to approve the change(s).
(d) The President or faculty advisor will submit the amended
Constitution
to the collevtive. The changes will become effective upon
approval by the
membership.
