In January and February 2010, The Sarofim School of Fine Arts at Southwestern University will offer historic performances of three musical works by Claude Debussy that were inspired by Belgian poet Pierre Louÿs' Les Chansons de Bilitis (Songs of Bilitis). Here, we document the process of rediscovering these artworks, in modern guise and in a historical reconstruction. By revisiting art inspired by Bilitis, we hope to foster new discourse and social awareness, just as Louÿs and Debussy did when they first introduced her over a century ago.
