History
Southwestern University is a United Methodist related institution of higher education. It is a direct descendant of four Methodist institutions of higher learning whose names are etched in the University seal: Rutersville College, Wesleyan College, McKenzie College and Soule University. Rutersville College, founded in 1840, was the first college in what later became the state of Texas. In the 1870s, the Methodist conferences and founders of these four institutions came together to establish one central Methodist college in Texas, Southwestern University. Each predecessor college had a vision consistent with its Methodist heritage-an emphasis on higher learning for the glory of God and the service of humanity. This tradition continues today, as Southwestern University remains affiliated with the United Methodst Church and seeks to educate students from many cultures, regions and faiths to form new leaders who will serve the needs of tomorrow.
