University Chapel Services are held each Thursday during the regular semester at 11:00am in the Lois Perkins Chapel. The services are open to anyone who would like to attend. Student greeters, readers, and musicians help to lead these services organized by Dr. Beverly Jones, university chaplain. The Chapel Planning Committee meets monthly to plan these and other special services. The University Chorale, SU Singers and other student musicians present special music in chapel on a regular basis. Services are inter-denominational. Communion is offered on the first Thursdays in October, November, February, March and April.

Special Services

Sunday Services are offered during special times of the school year including Orientation, Homecoming, Family Days and Commencement. There are no regular Sunday services held at the Chapel. Rather, students are encouraged to attend Saturday and Sunday services at the church or congregation of their choice. Candlelight (left) is a long tradition at Southwestern and in Georgetown, celebrating the season of Advent. The University Chorale and Orchestra present special music during this service of lessons and carols. Candlelight is held on the first Thursday of Advent with two services (5:30 and 7 pm). A holiday reception follows the 7 pm service in the McCombs Campus Center.

Ash Wednesday Services are held each year marking the beginning of the season of Lent. The service, held at noon in the Chapel, includes a brief meditation and the imposition of ashes. Persons from all faith traditions are welcome to participate.

Chapel Planning Committee

The Chapel Planning Committee is made up of students interested in planning and leading chapel services and learning more about the history and practices of worship traditions. The Chapel Planning Committee meets monthly over dinner to share ideas and make plans. The committee goes on a retreat once a year to explore a theme in depth and to plan for chapel services and special events.
