SOUTHWESTERN STUDENTS TO SHOWCASE THEIR WORK APRIL 9 *CAMPUS CALENDAR *

The many talents of Southwestern students will be on display Wednesday,
April 9, as the university hosts its 9th annual Student Works Symposium,
formerly known as the Undergraduate Research and Creative Works Symposium.
The event, titled "From Every Voice," will begin at 5 p.m. in the Red
and Charline McCombs Campus Center and the Alma Thomas Fine Arts Center.
Creative works, music and theatre pieces will be presented in the Fine
Arts Center, and research projects will be presented in the ballrooms of
the Campus Center. The Southwestern University Chorale will perform in
the Cove, which is located on the ground floor of the Campus Center.
The event is free and open to the public.
Student projects will address topics such as the design of a computer
game for interactive language learning, re-designed admissions materials
for Southwestern University from a student's perspective, the economics
of ethanol, the politics of Facebook, costume designs from the recent
production of Fiddler on the Roof, and much more. Some students
participating in the symposium have been working on their projects since
the spring of 2007.

NEW WOMEN'S SOCCER COACH NAMED
After a thorough national search, Southwestern University has hired
Jene' Baclawski to become the third head women's soccer coach in program
history. She begins work April 14.
"I'm extremely excited to be a part of such a prestigious academic
institution as Southwestern," Baclawski said. "The Athletic Department
and women's soccer program prides itself on success. I look forward to
building on last year's success and getting the opportunity to coach a
great group of young ladies. I'm excited about the reputation of the
school academically as well as the facilities and the conference
Southwestern is a part of. I am honored to be joining the Southwestern
family."
Baclawski comes to the Pirates after serving the last two years as the
assistant women's soccer coach and coordinator of the Athlete Tutor
Program at Emory University. She brings experience working at a
nationally renowned university with a strong academic background which
will suit her well at Southwestern. A Texas native, Baclawski comes to
Southwestern with a knowledge of the state. That knowledge, along with
her dynamic personality, will be a major asset in recruiting.

FRATERNITY HOSTS TEXAS SENATOR FOR LEADERSHP LUNCHEON APRIL 11
The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Southwestern will hold its next
Leadership Luncheon Series on Friday, April 11, at noon. The event will
feature Texas District 14 Senator and former Austin Mayor Kirk Watson.
Sen. Watson is vice-chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation and
Homeland Security. Most recently, he was named legislative "Rookie of
the Year" by Texas Monthly Magazine. Sen. Watson will speak to the
Southwestern University campus community on the topics of leadership in
the legislature and law.
Pi Kappa Alpha will provide a free lunch to the first 50 attendees with
the help of McAlister's Deli of Georgetown.

OPERA THEATRE FOR CHILDREN APRIL 11-12
The Sarofim School of Fine Arts' Music Department presents opera for
children by Southwestern University Opera Theatre. "Chanticleer" by
Seymore Barab is a one-act comic opera about a hen, a rooster and a fox.
The performance will be directed by Bruce Cain, associate professor of
music, and assisted by David Utterback, part-time instructor of music.
The opera will be held at the Alma Thomas Theater on Friday, April 11,
and Saturday, April 12, at 7 p.m.

NOTABLES
*Eileen Cleere*, associate professor of English, was recently invited by
the Women's Studies Program at Texas A&M University to present material
from her book-in-progress, "The Sanitary Arts: Aesthetic Philosophy and
the Victorian Cleanliness Campaigns." On March 28, she delivered a
lecture titled "Intensive Culture: Aesthetics and Purity in the Eugenic
Novels of Sarah Grand."
*Edward L. Kain*, professor of sociology and University Scholar is
presenting a paper titled "If You Build It, They Will Learn: Using
National Standards to Create a Challenging, yet Flexible, Sociology
Curriculum" at the annual meetings of the Pacific Sociological
Association, being held April 10-13 in Portland, Ore. The paper is in a
session titled "Creating a Standardized, Rigorous Undergraduate
Sociology Curriculum." Kain is also co-leading a workshop titled
"Information Literacy: The Partnership of Sociology Faculty and Social
Science Librarians."
*Alicia L. Moore*, associate professor of education and member of the
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., would like to thank the following
faculty and staff members for sponsoring student admission tickets for
the 50th Annual Ebony Fashion Fair: *Eric Selbin*, *Stephen Marble*,

At the 2008 meeting of the International Studies Association, *Eric
Selbin*, professor of political science and University Scholar,
presented a paper titled "Resistance, Rebellion, and Revolution: The
Persistence, Power, and Prevalence of Story," which outlines his
forthcoming book "Revolution, Rebellion, Resistance: The Power of
Story." He also chaired the annual meeting of the New Millennium Books
in International Studies series he co-edits for Rowman & Littlefield
Publishers.
Eight sociology majors from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology
will be presenting their research at the 2008 annual meetings of the
Southern Sociological Society in Richmond Va., April 10-12. Students
presenting their research are: *Tristine Baccam*, "Rebuilding the House
that Jack Built: Comparative Analysis of Immigration and Residential
Crowding in the US"; *Megan Collins*, "Bureaucratic Traditions,
Consensus and the Role of the Media in the American Civil Liberties
Union Central Texas Chapter";* Lauren Cox*, "Trabajadores Unan!:
Leaders, Collective Identity, and Conflict Resolution among Latino
Immigrant Workers"; *Rachael Die*, "Communities of Color Fighting Toxic
Contamination: A Case Study of Grassroots Environmental Justice and
Community Advocacy"; *Sarah Fankhauser*, "Guardian Angels at the
Grassroots: A Study of the Factors that Shape Individuals Into
Activists"; *Cody Faulk,* "Fighting the Religious Right in Texas: How
Political Activist Organizations Recruit and Maintain Members in the
Fight for a Division Between Church and State"; *Anne Olson*, "Which
Side Are You On? An Examination of the Recruitment Tactics of a Local
Education Union"; and *Nicole Powell*, "Examining Social Class:
Comparisons Between Attitudes and Composition of a College Campus and
the United States." The papers resulted from individual research
projects in the sociology capstone seminar under the direction of *Maria
Lowe*, and the Research Methods course taught by *Edward L. Kain*.
