The many talents of Southwestern students will be on display Wednesday, April 9, as the university hosts its 9th annual Student Works Symposium, formerly known as the Undergraduate Research and Creative Works Symposium. The event, titled "From Every Voice," will begin at 5 p.m. in the Red and Charline McCombs Campus Center and the Alma Thomas Fine Arts Center. Creative works, music and theatre pieces will be presented in the Fine Arts Center, and research projects will be presented in the ballrooms of the Campus Center. The Southwestern University Chorale will perform in the Cove, which is located on the ground floor of the Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public. Student projects will address topics such as the design of a computer game for interactive language learning, re-designed admissions materials for Southwestern University from a student's perspective, the economics of ethanol, the politics of Facebook, costume designs from the recent production of Fiddler on the Roof, and much more. She begins work April 14. "I'm extremely excited to be a part of such a prestigious academic institution as Southwestern," Baclawski said. "The Athletic Department and women's soccer program prides itself on success. I look forward to building on last year's success and getting the opportunity to coach a great group of young ladies. I'm excited about the reputation of the school academically as well as the facilities and the conference Southwestern is a part of. I am honored to be joining the Southwestern family." Baclawski comes to the Pirates after serving the last two years as the assistant women's soccer coach and coordinator of the Athlete Tutor Program at Emory University. Southwestern President Jake B. Schrum has received the Dr. E. Joseph Savoie Chief Executive Leadership Award from District IV of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), which includes Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Mexico. The Chief Executive Leadership Awards were created in 1999 to recognize leaders of CASE-member institutions for outstanding efforts to promote understanding and support of education. Nominees must demonstrate the ability to create a vision and inspire others, and must establish a positive image for their institution while leading it to even higher levels of success. Schrum received the award April 6 during the annual CASE IV conference held in Little Rock, Ark. Schrum has been president of Southwestern University (his alma mater) since 2000. Prior to that, he was president of Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth from 1991 to 2000. Schrum has served as national board chair for CASE as well as for the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) and the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT). Gwen Sherman, a 1980 graduate who serves as director of finance and administration for the Seattle-based Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has received the Distinguished Alumna Award from Southwestern University. The award was presented April 10 during a day of activities that also included a panel discussion on equity in education -- a topic that is of personal interest to Sherman. Steve Seleznow, director of education at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, shared some of the initiatives that the foundation has undertaken to ensure that all children have equal opportunity to quality education. Sherman earned a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from Southwestern. At Southwestern, she helped set up the university's Student Foundation and was its first president. James Winkler, General Secretary of the General Board of Church and Society for the United Methodist Church, will give the 2008 commencement address at Southwestern. The ceremony will be Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m. in the Corbin J. Robertson Center. The General Board of Church and Society is the international public policy and social justice agency of the United Methodist Church. Winkler has been the chief executive of the board since November 2000, overseeing a staff of 26 with offices on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., and in New York City across from the United Nations. Winkler has led delegations to the Middle East, Iraq and Germany, working for peaceful public policy in the midst of global conflict. He also has traveled throughout Africa, Asia and Europe promoting the justice work of the United Methodist Church. The program prepares students for leadership and service, especially in the fields of administration and business. It has been sponsored by the James S. Kemper Foundation in Chicago since 1948. Kemper Scholars receive annual scholarships of $3,000 to $8,000 during their sophomore, junior and senior years of college. Kemper Scholars also receive $6,000 stipends for work as interns in major nonprofit organizations in Chicago during the summer following their sophomore year. During the summer following their junior year, scholars are eligible for grants ranging from $2,000 to $6,000 to support an internship in a for-profit organization of their choice anywhere in the world. Each fall, Kemper Scholars attend a national conference to discuss their summer projects, meet former Kemper Scholars, and consider topics in administration, leadership and business. They also will read and discuss major works on leadership, service ethics or business and have frequent contact with Kemper Foundation staff to discuss their academic and professional goals. Anderson and Hengst, both adjunct professors of music, will be joined by their faculty colleague, pianist Kiyoshi Tamagawa, professor of music. This recital is free and open to the public. Sophomore *Charles Prince* recently presented his paper titled "Crafting Educational Policies in Zimbabwe: Moving Beyond Modern Colonialism" at the Tenth Annual Africana Studies Research Colloquium held at Bowling Green State University. *Todd Watson*, associate director of systems and networking in Information Technology Services, recently spent eight nights collecting data with the 2.1 meter diameter telescope at McDonald Observatory near Fort Davis, Texas, as part of an international collaboration of astronomers called the "Whole Earth Telescope." Watson was one of 57 astronomers using 28 telescopes at different observatories around the globe to continuously monitor three pulsating white dwarf stars. Four Anthropology students presented papers at the Southwestern Anthropological Association's Annual Meeting in Fullerton, Calif., April 10-12. *Shauna Davidson *presented "Orphan Care in Senegal," *Tricia Dickson *presented "Little Emperors Wear Prada: The One Child Policy and Globalization in Shanghai," *Lauren Griebel *presented "The Other Side of the Islands: HIV/AIDS in Fiji," and *Casey McAuliffe *presented "Young Mothers and a Young Anthropology Student."
