*SOUTHWESTERN PROFESSOR RECEIVES FULBRIGHT AWARD
*Suzanne Fox Buchele, associate professor of computer science, has
received a Fulbright award to teach in Africa during the 2006-2007
academic year.
Buchele will teach computer science and mathematics at Ashesi
University, a private liberal arts college in Ghana's capital city of
Accra. The university was founded in 1999 by Patrick Awuah, a native of
Ghana who earned an engineering degree from Swarthmore College and later
became a millionaire working for Microsoft.
In addition to her teaching, Buchele plans to study the divide in
technology between developed and developing countries. She hopes to
identify ways in which developing countries such as Ghana can more
effectively improve their technological and economic presence in the
global market.

DAVID GAINES NAMED NEW DIRECTOR OF THE PAIDEIA® PROGRAM *
David J. Gaines, associate professor of English and former Brown
Teaching Professor, has been named director of the Paideia® Program
effective July 1.
In 2002, Gaines was named one of 10 inaugural Paideia® Professors at
Southwestern. Gaines has been a member of the Southwestern faculty
since 1984. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford
University and advanced degrees (M.A. and Ph.D.) from The University of
Texas at Austin. He teaches courses in American literature, film studies
and cultural studies, and has won three teaching awards in his career.
Gaines will continue to teach not only in the Paideia® Program but also
in the First-Year Seminar Program and the English Department.

*NOTABLES*
A paper titled "Irreversible Work in Rapid Expansion of Gases Against
the Atmosphere" by *Fred Hilgeman*, professor of chemistry, Gary
Bertrand and *Robert Lockwood* '08 has been accepted for publication in
the /Journal of Chemical Education/. The work is the result of
collaboration between Hilgeman's laboratory and Bertrand at the
University of Missouri, Rolla. The experimental work of data collection
for the publication was done by Lockwood, a chemistry major, and was
supported by the Welch Chemistry Department Grant as a part of
Lockwood's summer research.
*SU IN THE NEWS*
The /Williamson County Sun/ and the /Austin Student/ ran stories about
Southwestern hosting the 2006 lacrosse championships for the Lone Star
Alliance.
David Gaines, associate professor of English, was interviewed by the
/Minneapolis Star-Tribune /about the movie "The Da Vinci Code."
President Jake B. Schrum was profiled in the /Austin Business Journal/.
The /Austin American-Statesman/ and the /Austin Business Journal/ ran a
photo of Chrisitana Little and her parents from the Campaign kickoff gala.
