*WORK BY SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR WILL PROVIDE MORE ACCURATE
PICTURE OF AMERICANS LIVING IN POVERTY*
Dirk Early, professor of economics, has been selected to prepare a
report that will help government agencies more accurately determine the
number of people living in poverty in the United States.
Currently, the U.S. government uses the same income thresholds to define
poverty, regardless of whether families live in rural Texas or New York
City. Realizing this, the Department of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD) decided to commission a report that would come up with good
estimates of what a modest unit of rental housing such as a two-bedroom,
one-bathroom apartment would cost in different areas. As a member of
HUD's Assisted Housing Research Cadre, Early was selected to prepare
this report.

*THEATRE DEPARTMENT PRESENTS "A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE"*
The Sarofim School of Fine Arts, Department of Theatre, presents "A Man
of No Importance," directed by Rod Caspers at the Jesse H. and Mary
Gibbs Jones Theatre March 31, April 1, 7 and 8 at 8 p.m. and April 2 and
9 at 3 p.m.
Based on the 1994 movie of the same name, this funny and tender Irish
musical tells the tender story of Alfie Byrne, an Oscar Wilde-loving bus
driver in 1960s Dublin, who spends his off-hours directing an amateur
group of thespian misfits called St. Imelda's Players at the local
Catholic parish hall. The dedicated group is determined to stage the
controversial "Salome" (complete with its scandalous 'Dance of the Seven
Veils') to humorous and disastrous results. The play's sensuality raises
the ire of church authorities, and in the ensuing struggle for art,
Alfie is finally forced to confront his own sexual identity and take a
stand in the world. Beautiful and spirited Irish melodies weave their
way through this sometimes comic, ultimately moving, story of human
passion that asks us to walk in the shoes of others and listen with our
hearts. (Contains material suited for mature audiences.)
Tickets may be purchased in person or over the phone with a Visa or
MasterCard by calling the box office at 512-863-1378 Monday through
Friday between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and 1 hour prior to curtain. Adult
ticket prices are $12 and senior (62 and over) and students (with valid
ID) are $10. There are also discounts available for groups of 15. Call
the box office at 512-863-1378 for all information and schedules.

of History *Elizabeth Green Musselman's* first book, /Nervous
Conditions: Science and the Body Politic in Early Industrial Britain/.
The book discusses 18th- and 19th-century British scientists'
surprisingly frequent bouts with nervous disorder, and argues that
scientists used their ability to transcend these bodily problems as an
argument for the sciences becoming a more authoritative, central part of
public life in industrial Britain. More information about the book can
