*SOUTHWESTERN STUDENTS TO **HELP** **REBUILD** **GULF** **COAST** DURING 
SPRING BREAK*

Students from Southwestern University will be joining hundreds of 
college students from across the country who plan to spend their spring 
break helping rebuild areas along the Gulf Coast that were destroyed by 
hurricanes last fall.
 
Eleven Southwestern students and two staff members will be going to Long 
Beach, Miss., March 11-18 to assist with the Episcopal/Lutheran Relief 
Effort (see http://campcoastcare.com). The students will spend the week 
rebuilding houses.

*FOUR NEW STUDENTS SELECTED TO RECEIVE SUMNERS SCHOLARSHIPS*
 
Southwestern awards four Sumner scholarships a year for students 
majoring in political science, history, pre-law or education. Students 
are selected for the scholarships based on their academic history, 
extracurricular activities and leadership experience. The scholarships 
are awarded in the sophomore year and are good for the junior and senior 
years.
 
Students recently named Sumners Scholars are sophomores Jaime Perez, 
Clare Brock, Frances Moss and Elizabeth Knox.
 
*WILLIAMSON COUNTY SUN RECEIVES FIRST **GEORGETOWN** COLLEGE AWARD FROM 
SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY*

Southwestern has presented its first-ever Georgetown College Award to 
the /Williamson County Sun/.

The award was created this year to recognize citizens, organizations or 
businesses that have worked to make Georgetown seem more like a college 
town.

Linda Scarborough and Clark Thurmond, the co-owners and co-publishers of 
the paper, accepted the award Feb. 17 at a ceremony held during halftime 
of the men's basketball game featuring Southwestern versus Centre College.

*FREE CAR WASH FOR FACULTY AND STAFF MARCH 9*

The sisters of Delta Delta Delta invite all faculty and staff members to 
attend their Apple Polishing Car Wash on Thursday, March 9, from noon to 
2 p.m. in the parking lot near the Kappa Sig house. We appreciate all 
the hard work and dedication you have for students and SU, and we hope 
you can stop by for a free wash during this two hour period. If the 
weather is bad the event will be postponed until a later date.  For

*NOTABLES*
 
*David Tabb Stewart*, assistant professor of religion, has been named to 
/Who's Who Among //America//'s Teachers/ for a second time. Nominated 
both times by Southwestern students, he will next appear in the 10th 
edition. Stewart also presented two papers at the annual conference of 
the Society of Biblical Literature in November 2005. "The Parturient's 
Ritual for a Girl: The Puzzle of Double Pollution" is slated to appear 
in /Feminist Hermeneutics, Gender and Biblical Law/ in 2007. "Does the 
Priestly Purity Code (Leviticus 11-15) Domesticate Women?" will appear 
in /Perspectives on Purity and Purification in the Bible /in 2006.
 
*Eric Selbin*, professor of political science, presented a paper titled 
"Whither Revolution:  Stories of Resistance, Rebellion, and, Yes, 
Revolution in the Neo-Liberal Age" at the annual meeting of Rocky 
Mountain Council for Latin American Studies.
 
*Janel E. Owens* '03 and *Emily D. Niemeyer*, associate professor of 
chemistry, have published an article "Analysis of chemical contamination 
within a canal in a Mexican border colonia" in the most recent issue of 
/Environmental Pollution/.  Their study examines industrial and urban 
pollution levels within /Derechos Humanos/, a /colonia popular/ in 
Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
 
*Todd K. Watson*, associate director of systems and networks, 
co-authored a paper published last month in the /Astronomical Journal/.  
The paper titled, "Cataclysmic Variables from Sloan Digital Sky Survey. 
V. The Fifth Year (2004)," includes results of research Watson conducted 
in February 2005 at UT's McDonald Observatory.  The paper presents those 
observations and others which focus on pre-release data obtained from 
the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
 
A string quartet consisting of SU student violinists *Kate Bizzell* and 
*Victoria Chang*, violist *Rohan Sreenivasan* and cellist *Kevin High 
*performed at the Texas Music Educators' Association annual convention 
in San Antonio as participants in their Student Showcase. Showcase 
performers, selected by competitive audition, played full-length prelude 
concerts to performances by the All-State student ensembles (bands, 
choirs and orchestras) on Saturday, Feb. 18, the final day of the 
convention. The string quartet has been together two years and is 
coached by *Eri Lee Lam*, assistant professor of music.

*Bob Bednar*, associate professor of communication, was featured in an 
article about the controversy surrounding roadside memorials in /The 
Salt Lake Tribune/.
 
*Thomas Noble Howe*, professor of art history, appeared in an article 
about the touring exhibition "In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside 
Villas of the Roman Elite" in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
