*PUBLIC VIEWING NIGHT AT THE FOUNTAINWOOD OBSERVATORY *

Southwestern will host a public viewing at the Fountainwood Observatory
from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Friday, March 3. The observatory is located on the
northeast side of campus adjacent to the Rockwell Baseball Field.

Physics Department faculty and observers from the Williamson County
Astronomy Club (www.williamson-astro.org) will be on hand to guide
visitors through their viewing experience. On this evening, the moon
will be a thin waxing crescent in the western sky. In the eastern sky,
magnificently ringed Saturn will appear two degrees from the beautiful
"Beehive" star cluster. The constellation of Orion will appear high in
the southern sky. This constellation contains the Great Orion Nebula, a
star forming region of gas and dust.

Fountainwood viewing nights are always free and open to the public. For
weather-related updates, call the Fountainwood Observatory hotline at
512-863-1242.

*OPERATION ACHIEVEMENT GIVES STUDENTS A TASTE OF COLLEGE LIFE*

Operation Achievement, an after-school program for middle school
students, is extending the students' college experience from their
regular visits to the Southwestern campus to an all-day campus event
March 29, where they will be able to join their mentors in several
college classes, tour the residence halls and eat lunch in the cafeteria.

Operation Achievement was established in 1989 by Southwestern University
and the Georgetown Independent School District to help youth become
interested in furthering their education past high school graduation.
This tutoring/mentoring hybrid allows participating students to form a
unique bond with their Southwestern University mentors, getting
one-on-one time to accomplish student-specific goals set at the
beginning of the program. Students also take part in different
enrichment activities each week.

For more information, contact Joni Ragle, director of Operation
Achievement, at 512-863-1219 or by e-mail at ragle2 at southwestern.edu.
