On October 11th and 12th, Southwestern University will be hosting "Peace Conference 2006: making multi-faith connections in the practice of peace and non-violence." This conference will be focusing on the issues surrounding faith-inspired peace seeking. Our goal is to host a conversation concerning the role that religious convictions can play in bringing about peace through non-violent means. This conference will explore the productive collaboration that can occur between persons of various convictions rather than the familiar and often-violent religious encounters that we hear about so frequently.

The Vance Engleman World Peace and Nonviolence Collection

The Vance Engleman World Peace and Nonviolence Collection was donated from the estate of Mr. Vance Engleman, a management consultant who became interested in ideas of peace and nonviolence later in his life. He traveled around the world learning about nonviolence practices and conducting peace and nonviolence workshops. The Southwestern A. Frank Smith, Jr. Library received the collection this year. Throughout the month of October, many items from the Collection will be on display in the Library Periodicals Room located on the first floor of the Library.

The Collection includes the 100-volume Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi as well as more than 100 additional printed and audiovisual works about Gandhi's life and nonviolent practices, and the work of Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Teresa. The collection also contains artwork, including busts of Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Teresa. The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi, which speak to Gandhi's experiences through many letters and journal entries, are accessible for library use. Other books and videos in the collection are shelved and available for checkout by students and other library patrons. Southwestern joins The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Houston as being among the few universities in Texas to own the set.

A bibliography will be available at the display, listing all the items that are housed at the A. Frank Smith Library Center.

There will be a panel of other faith-motivated peace practitioners responding to his lecture and a series of workshops discussing convictions as relates to peacemaking. Panelists and workshop facilitators are yet to be announced. Other events will include a peace related art exhibit, various musical and theatrical performances and a book signing by Mr. Gandhi.
