Program Goals

Paideia Scholars, through their participation in the Paideia Program, will…

  • make connections between their in-class and out-of-class experiences, as well as between their various classes.

  • be more reflective about the experiences in which they participate.

  • be intentional about their choices - both in the courses they select and in the out-of-class experiences in which they participate. Paideia Scholars will also play a role in further shaping this program.

  • have a strong understanding of diversity and the meaning of immersing oneself in another culture.

  • have a broad understanding of leadership and will have examined different leadership styles and how they impact decision-making and group processes.

  • participate in collaborative research and creative works. In doing so, they will not only produce an "original" work, but they will also analyze the process of collaboration.

  • develop an understanding of the reciprocity of service and the importance of being a social citizen.

Program Policies

Absences: Attendance in your Paideia Seminar and at your Paideia one-on-one appointments is required. Because attendance and participation are such integral parts of this program, students who miss either a seminar session or a one-on-one meeting with their Paideia Professor due to an unexcused absence will be placed on probation with the Paideia Program. Any additional unexcused absences during the duration of the Paideia Program will typically result in your termination from the Program. All probationary cases will be reviewed by the group of ten Paideia Professors.

Paideia Progress: Progress in the Paideia Program will be measured through your Paideia Seminars. Your work in the seminar is awarded a Pass, a D, or an F. Your Paideia Professor will be able to give you specific feedback and information on expectations for each "grade". Earning a D in the Paideia Seminar will result in you being placed on probation with the program, and typically, any additional D in a Paideia Seminar will result in your discontinuing the program. Earning an F in the Paideia Seminar will typically result in your discontinuation in the program.

Paideia Components: All Paideia Scholars will complete experiences in the four areas: Intercultural Experiences, Service, Leadership, and Collaborative Research and Creative Works. In all of these areas you will have experiences throughout the year as well as an anchoring experience in each area prior to graduation. The specifics of these experiences will be described in your Paideia Seminar. In order to graduate as a Paideia Scholar you must complete these experiences.

Expenses: Up to $1000 of Paideia-related expenses will be paid on your behalf during or following your Junior year. You should work with your Paideia Professor to estimate your budget. Plan ahead as you think about the expenses associated with service experiences, collaborative research and creative works, and your intercultural experience. Also plan to apply for other sources of funding, if you are selecting options that are particularly costly. As stated in your original letter, if you do not complete the Paideia Program you must repay this $1000.

Communication during Intercultural Experience: During your semester or summer that you are immersed in an intercultural experience, it is required that you a) maintain a personal journal about your experiences, and b) that you share some of your reflections on a regular basis with your Paideia Professor and others in your seminar group. The latter requirement may be fullilled through e-mail, additions to your electronic portfolio, or through the regular mail. Your Paideia Professor may have additional expectations or format requirements.

Additional Intercultural Experience Obligations: Before leaving for your intercultural experience, you are required to attend the pre-departure sessions offered by the Office of Intercultural Learning. You are also required to attend the post-return reentry meetings that are offered by the same office. These sessions are essential to a successful intercultural experience, and as such, are required in order to fulfill your intercultural anchoring experience.

Medical Withdrawals or Leaves of Absence: If you must leave the University due to a medical withdrawal or an official "Leave of Absence" and you are otherwise in good-standing with the University and making satisfactory progress towards completing the Paideia Program, you are eligible to continue in the Paideia Program upon your return. You will need to present your circumstance to an advisory team of Paideia Professors so that they can consider the best way for you to "catch up" to your Paideia Seminar Group.

Probation in the Paideia Program: Probation in the Paideia Program may occur under several circumstances: 1) You have one unexcused absence in a Paideia Seminar; 2) You have received a D in one of your Paideia Seminars; 3) You fall below a 2.0 gpa during any semester while in the Paideia Program. Once on Probation, your case will be reviewed by an advisory panel of Paideia Professors. They will make recommendations as to what action should occur. In most cases more than one unexcused absence throughout the program, a second D in a Paideia seminar, or a consecutive semester of falling below a 2.0 gpa will result in your discontinuation with the Paideia Program. If you have already received any of the $1000 of reimbursements for Paideia-related expenses, you will need to repay those funds to the University. Probation in the program is for the duration of the program and does not end at the conclusion of a particular seminar.
