Studies have shown that prompts are more effective in guiding student writing when they are discussed aloud with the class and students have been provided with classroom support for their writing.  For more on guiding student writing, please see our pages on planning writing in your classroom and teaching writing in your classroom.

You can also help produce excellent student writing by creating a rubric that you provide to students with the prompt.
