Carnegie Comparison Institutions
In 1970, the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education developed a classification of colleges and universities to support its program of research and policy analysis. It has been widely used in the study of higher education, both as a way to represent and control for institutional differences, and also in the design of research studies to ensure adequate representation of sampled institutions, students, or faculty.
The following list comprises 41 institutions with similar characteristics to Southwestern University: 1) Private, not-for-profit, 2) Four-year or above, 3) Exclusively undergraduate four-year, 4) Arts & sciences focus, no graduate coexistence, 5) Small four-year, highly residential, and 6) Full-time four-year, more selective, lower transfer-in. Links to each college are provided below.
