Pirates for Pride
The main intention of the Pirates for Pride is to foster a visible, tangible support group for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and Pansexual communities and their Allies.
Pirates for Pride, formerly SU Allies, hosts multiple events throughout the academic year. These include activism based, social, and educational events.
We host mixers, as well as a large social event every semester. In the fall we have Drag Ball, which celebrates the aspects of the trans community, and in the spring we have Glam Jam. Starting last year, we will now also host ShameLess, a queer music event that takes place in the spring.
Our activism events throughout the year attract a large amount of participation from the entire campus. We celebrate many events during October, LGBT history month, like AIDS Walk Austin. We also host National Coming Out Day, Trans Day of Remembrance, National Day of Silence, documentary showings, and charity fundraisers. Our most recent additions to events we will do annually include attending the National Gay & Lesbian Taskforce’s Creating Change Convention, as well as Lavender Graduation, which honors LGBTQIAP and feminist studies majors/minors upon their graduation from SU with a lavender tassel and ceremony.
We also bring at least one speaker/activist onto campus each semester to educate the campus on LGBTQIA issues. Pirates for Pride has brought nationally acclaimed author, playwright, performance artist, and gender theorist Kate Bornstein onto campus. Pride also hosted Robyn Ochs, the nation’s leading bi-rights activist, and she hosted some phenomenal workshops.
