SU Costa Rica Program

San Joaquín de Flores, Costa Rica


Southwestern University, in collaboration with Academic Programs International (API), has created a program in San Joaquín de Flores, Costa Rica specially designed for Southwestern students.  The SU Costa Rica Program is an eight-week, eight-credit program for students with a minimum of one year of college-level Spanish by which students will receive credit for Spanish III and Spanish IV.

Students must have completed the language prerequisite of Spanish II, or the equivalent, in order to be eligible.

The cost for this eight-week program for summer 2014 is $5,495.

There is a $550 application deposit due at the time of application — February 1st — to the Office of Intercultural Learning.  Checks should be made out to Southwestern University.  Please note: should a student not be accepted to participate in the program or should the program not make, Southwestern will refund the $550 application deposit.

The program fee includes: tuition for eight credits, single room and three meals per day with a host family (located within walking distance of the Instituto), laundry service once a week, airport pick-up and ground transportation from the airport, as well as on all API organized excursions, hotel and breakfast costs during organized excursions, entrance fees during excursions and cultural activities, API resident director, medical insurance, and tutoring sessions.  The fee does not include airfare to and from San José, Costa Rica.  Students are responsible for their own flight arrangements, lunch and dinner on excursions, transportation for personal travel within Costa Rica, internet café expenses, as well as passport and personal expenses (toiletries, activities, snacks, personal travel,

Students spend their first week completing an extensive orientation.  The program then consists of a week-long review of Spanish basics to prepare students for the fast-paced intermediate coursework to come.  Students will then attend intermediate Spanish classes taught by a local professor at the Instituto San Joaquín de Flores.

Housing & Meals

While in San Joaquín de Flores, students will live with carefully selected host families who will provide students with three meals per day and laundry service one time per week.  Typically, only one student will be assigned to each family.  All housing is within walking distance of the Instituo

Cultural Activities & Excursions

The program begins with an on-site orientation in San José.  Students will attend sessions on cultural adaptation, host family living, and safety while also visiting some of San José’s most important sites.  Students will also participate in excursions to Cahuita National Park, Cartago, Lankester Gardens, and Manuel Antonio.
