SU Buenos Aires Program

Southwestern University, in collaboration with Academic Programs International (API), has created a program in Buenos Aires, Argentina specially designed for Southwestern students.  The SU Buenos Aires Program is a eight-week, eight-credit program for students with a minimum of one year of college-level Spanish by which students will receive credit for Spanish III and Spanish IV.

Students must have completed the language prerequisite of Spanish II, or the equivalent, as well as a minimum 3.0 G.P.A.* in order to be eligible.

$5,010 — the price is dependent upon enrollment and may change should enrollment change.

There is a $550 non-refundable application deposit due at the time of application — February 1st — to the Office of Intercultural Learning.  Checks should be made out to Southwestern University.  Please note: should a student not be accepted to participate in the program or should the program not make, Southwestern will refund the $550 application deposit.

The program fee includes: tuition for eight credits, room and two meals (breakfast and dinner) with the host family, laundry service once a week, airport pick-up and ground transportation to and from the airport as well as all API organized excursions, hotel and breakfast costs during organized excursions, entrance fees during excursions and cultural activities, API resident director, medical insurance, and tutoring sessions.  The fee does not include airfare to and from Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Students are responsible for their own flight arrangements, lunch and dinner on excursions, transportation within Buenos Aires, internet café expenses, additional meals (lunch), photocopies of class materials/readings, as well as passport and personal expenses (toiletries, activities, snacks, personal travel, etc.)

Students spend their first few days completing a program orientation.  The program then consists of a week-long review of Spanish basics to prepare students for the fast-paced intermediate coursework to come.  Students will then attend intermediate Spanish classes taught by a local professor.

Housing & Meals

While in Buenos Aires, students will live with carefully selected host families who will provide students with two meals per day and laundry service one time per week.  Two students will be assigned to each family.

Cultural Activities & Excursions

The program begins with an on-site orientation in Buenos Aires.  Students will attend sessions on cultural adaptation, host family living, and safety while also visiting some of Buenos Aires’ most important sites.  One of the highlights of the program will be a two-day excursion to the city of Iguazú to view the waterfalls along the border between Argentina and Brazil.

Southwestern faculty will not be present for this program.  However, API has a well developed on-site structure and students will have access to an experienced support staff.
