OUR MESSAGE TO FACULTY
Civic engagement in higher education encompasses experiential pedagogies such as community-based learning and community-based research. The Office of Civic Engagement is intent upon ensuring that the community-engaged projects we recommend to faculty members will result in desired learning outcomes and that such projects elucidate ways in which one’s discipline can be applied to a real-world setting. Our Office provides:
- Information on and connections to social and public service agencies in Central Texas;
- Discipline-specific models of community-based learning and research in higher education;
- Resources and guidance to facilitate the implementation of community-based learning in academic courses.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT STATISTICS
- Over 74% of the student population participates in civic engagement, including community-based learning, activism, internships and community service.
- During the 2011-2012 academic year, 1042 students spent over 20,000 hours performing co-curricular outreach as volunteers and activists.
- Southwestern University has earned national acclaim for its civic engagement activities from the Carnegie Foundation and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
