Give us ONE day, at HOME during WINTER BREAK to help you make a CAREER CONNECTION
Past Participant Quote of the Day
“The Pirate Apprentice Days Program exceeded my expectations during my shadowing experience with Dr. Chaput and beyond to my experiences in Chile and back at Southwestern. I couldn’t have asked for a better and more influential Pirate Apprentice Day!” - Lauren Kjolhede ‘11 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, TX
WHAT ARE THE SU PIRATE APPRENTICE DAYS?
SU Pirate Apprentice Days allows you, the student, to participate in a one day visit designed for you to explore a career field of interest while building your own network of contacts and gaining valuable information that may be useful as you begin to think about career options and internships over the next couple of years.
DO I JOB SHADOW IN THE AUSTIN AREA ONLY?
NOT NECESSARILY! That is completely up to you!!! On your application we ask you to denote cities (including outside the state of Texas) that you would like to job shadow in. Previous participants selected cities where they would be during Winter Break or where they have family they were visiting during that time. In addition to Texas cities, last year we were able to match students with shadowing opportunities in New York City, Kentucky, Oklahoma and California. There are currently no funds available for travel so we recommend you select locations that work within your time schedule and travel abilities.
WHAT COMPANY WILL I SHADOW WITH?
Career Services will work with you to find the best alumni match for your interests. On the application form is a section where you can list specific companies you are interested in learning more about. While we cannot guarantee we can place you with one of your preferred companies/organizations, we will do our best to find an exciting location that can offer you the information and experience you are looking for.
IS THE PROGRAM FOR A WHOLE WEEK?
No, it is not for an entire week. We will arrange for you to shadow someone for at least ONE DAY and possibly more if it works with the alumna/us and your schedules. The program officially begins once we have begun Winter Break. Most students are matched during the first full week following finals in December or the first week of January. You will be asked to indicate your schedule preferences in your application.
DO I GET PAID?
Student participants will be responsible for all travel and housing costs, meals for yourself, completion of an evaluation, along with other general professional etiquette standards such as thank you letters, etc. to your host. The student will not receive compensation for their time during the job shadow experience.
HOW CAN I APPLY TO PARTICIPATE?
If you are a current SU Sophomore and are interested in this program, you can click on Apply Now! and complete your application. We have created a fillable PDF file for this year’s application process. Once you have entered your information, you must print it out and bring it to Career Services, located in the Prothro Center for Lifelong Learning, Ste. 140.
Applications are accepted annually during September and October.
All applicants are required to submit a completed application form along with a resume and one (1) letter of recommendation. We have a Faculty-Staff Recommendation Form listed below that you can request a faculty or staff member of your choice to complete. The recommendation form is a PDF Fillable form for the Faculty/Staff person recommending you to fill out. Feel free to request them to complete the recommendation form and send them the link to the form. They can then type in their information and print out the form or save it as a new file and email the attached file to Maria Kruger, Internship Coordinator. If you need help with your resume, please let us know. We currently have a resume template online in our Resources - Handouts section of our website to help you get started!
BUT I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS…
That is fine! If you cannot find the answer you needed here, please feel free to call our office at 512-863-1346 and we will do our best to help.
