Past Participant Quote of the Day
“The Pirate Apprentice Days Program exceeded my expectations during my shadowing experience with Dr. Chaput and beyond to my experiences in Chile and back at Southwestern. I couldn’t have asked for a better and more influential Pirate Apprentice Day!” - Lauren Kjolhede ’11 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, TX
WHAT ARE THE SU PIRATE APPRENTICE DAYS?
SU Pirate Apprentice Days allows you, the student, to participate in a one day visit designed for you to explore a career field of interest while building your own network of contacts and gaining valuable information that may be useful as you begin to think about career options and internships over the next couple of years. This is NOT an internship, but a chance for you to observe someone in a relevant career field you want to know more about.
DO I JOB SHADOW IN THE AUSTIN AREA ONLY?
NOT NECESSARILY! That is completely up to you!!! On your application we ask you to denote cities (including outside the state of Texas) that you would like to job shadow in. Previous participants selected cities where they would be during Winter Break, Summer Break, or where they have family they were visiting during that time. In addition to Texas cities, in past years we were able to match students with shadowing opportunities in New York City, Kentucky, Oklahoma, California and Massachusetts. There are currently no funds available for travel so we recommend you select locations that work within your time schedule and travel abilities.
WHAT COMPANY WILL I SHADOW WITH?
Career Services will work with you to find the best alumni match for your interests. On the application form is a section where you can list specific companies you are interested in learning more about. While we cannot guarantee we can place you with one of your preferred companies/organizations, we will do our best to find an exciting location that can offer you the information and experience you are looking for.
IS THE PROGRAM FOR A WHOLE WEEK?
No, it is not for an entire week. We will arrange for you to shadow someone for at least ONE DAY and possibly more if it works with the alumna/us and your schedules. The program officially begins once we have completed a semester. Most students are matched during the first full week following finals in December/May or the first week of January. You will be asked to indicate your schedule preferences in your application.
DO I GET PAID?
Student participants will be responsible for all travel and housing costs, meals for yourself, completion of an evaluation, along with other general professional etiquette standards such as thank you letters, etc. to your host. The student will not receive compensation for their time during the job shadow experience.
HOW CAN I APPLY TO PARTICIPATE?
If you are a current SU student and are interested in this program, you can login to PirateLink through the Career Services website. If you have not registered with PirateLink before, please contact our office at 512-863-1346 or stop by so we can send you the instructions. Once logged in, interested students will be able to access the online application on their PirateLink announcements screen when the application process opens for that term.
Applications are accepted annually during September and early October for Winter Break offerings, and in April and early May for Summer offerings.
All applicants are required to submit a completed application form along with their current resume and one (1) letter of recommendation. The recommendation must be from a current SU Faculty-Staff member of your choice. When you complete the application form, you will be required to provide the name and email of the faculty/staff person who will be recommending you. Upon receipt of your completed application, Career Services will send the recommendation form instructions to the SU faculty/staff person listed. If you need help with your resume, please let us know. We currently have a resume template online in the Document Library of PirateLink for you to use!
BUT I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS…
That is fine! If you cannot find the answer you needed here, please feel free to call our office at 512-863-1346 and we will do our best to help.
