Externships
In the Job Outlook 2003, published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), they surveyed employers on the importance of maintaining an organization's image on campus in a down economy and the impact on recruiting by offering experiential education programs. Southwestern University offers organizations the opportunity effectively market your organization to our students and faculty through an experiential education program called Experience Externships!
The goal of this program is to provide exposure for your organization to our students as well as introduce you to potential interns from Southwestern. We also give you the opportunity to potentially network with faculty for informal exchange of information. Our hope is to provide students with the opportunity to determine if their career interests match their perceptions of a particular career field. Southwestern's externship program is open to all SU students regardless of major or classification. Faculty members are invited based on the field represented by the organization.
This program is designed to provide up to ten (10) undergraduate, liberal arts students and a faculty member with an opportunity to visit a specific employer to explore career opportunities within that field. In addition, the visit provides the group with exposure to the environment of work for that particular field.
We hope you are interested and willing to tap into the people resources Southwestern University has to offer. Here are some ideas on how the Experience Externships! Program can be structured to meet your needs:
Option 1: Half Day
- Orientation/presentation
- Lunch with recent hires or interns, etc.
- Facility tour
- Presentation by various departments
- Closing and final questions
Option 2: Full Day
- All of Option 1
- Plus 1:1 shadowing experiences for participants
The Internship Development staff is primarily interested in giving our students experience. We are very flexible and will be glad to work with your organization with regard to scheduling an externship program that can meet your needs. For more information or to schedule an externship visit with your organization, contact Maria Kruger, Internship Coordinator at (512) 863-1767.
