Shaping Our Future: The Strategic Plan for Southwestern University 2010-2020

Our world is in desperate need of people who are bright, moral and courageous. Graduating students who make contributions toward the well-being of humanity has been central to Southwestern’s mission for 170 years. Our new strategic plan ensures that our students, faculty and alumni will continue to make a positive impact on our community and the world.

For more than three decades, Southwestern University has reaffirmed its mission, vision and direction by operating under the tenets of a Strategic Plan, and will continue to do so as we move into the second decade of the 21st century.

Momentum
The Strategic Plan for 2000-2010, in conjunction with funds raised through “Thinking Ahead: The Southwestern Campaign”:

  • Added 18 tenure-track faculty positions.
  • Launched the Paideia® Program.
  • Created an Office of Civic Engagement.
  • Expanded the Brown Scholars Program and the Dixon Scholarship Program.
  • Increased funds for much needed merit-based and need-based scholarships.
  • Constructed three new buildings and initiated renovation on five others.

Looking Forward
The overarching vision of Shaping Our Future: The Strategic Plan for Southwestern University 2010–2020 provides that over the next decade, “Southwestern University will position itself as a top-tier national liberal arts and sciences college by building upon its greatest strength—providing a transformational, residential, liberal arts and sciences education that empowers an increasingly diverse range of students to lead fulfilling lives in a global community.”

Our hope is that each Southwestern Experience will create in students and graduates alike a belief that they can change the world. I truly believe that Shaping Our Future will do much to achieve that goal.

By focusing on our academic mission—to provide students with an education that extends beyond the transmission of knowledge and skills to a concept of learning as a broad, integrated and transformational process—the value of a Southwestern education will be increased for every student and graduate.
