Retiring President Roy B. Shillling, Jr. honored as a "Legend of Texas"
Retiring Southwestern University President Roy B. Shilling, Jr. was honored as a "Legend of Texas" by Del Webb's Sun City Texas in
Georgetown in a ceremony held June 15. As one of seven honorees,
Shilling will have a permanent granite marker dedicated on the sidewalk
of The Legends of Texas Bridge, located on Sun City Boulevard.
The award recognizes citizens who are known for their unselfish
contributions to their communities and to the state of Texas. Del Webb
also donates $1,000 to the charity of each honoree’s choice.
"These Texans symbolize a commitment to improving the lives of other
Texans," said Ken Hull, vice president and general manager of Del Webb’s
Sun City Texas. "They serve as role models to us all and demonstrate
that one person can make a difference."
Shilling, Southwestern's 13th president, will officially retire June 30,
after serving the University for 19 years. Alumnus Jake B. Schrum '68
succeeds Shilling as president and takes office July 1.
Some of the former Sun City Legends include Barbara Jordan, Tom Landry,
Walter Cronkite, Barbara Bush, and Southwestern alumnus and Minnesota
Vikings owner Red McCombs.
