Southwestern University Honors Three Faculty Members
Patrick Veerkamp, professor and chair of the Department of Art, was recently awarded the William Carrington Finch Award at Southwestern's 2002 Commencement Convocation.
The award recognizes excellence in teaching, research, community service and furthering the aims of Southwestern University. It is named for William Carrington Finch, a member of the Southwestern faculty from 1941 to 1950, who served as its 11th president from 1950 to 1961.
Veerkamp was chosen by Southwestern President Jake B. Schrum from nominees provided by a committee of faculty, students and administrators. Veerkamp will carry the title, William Carrington Finch Professor, until the next award is made to a faculty member in the year 2004.
Two other faculty members were recently recognized with Southwestern University Teaching Awards for outstanding performance in the classroom. Dirk Early, associate professor of economics and business, won the award for a tenured professor, while Julie Thompson, assistant professor of communication, won the award for a non-tenured professor.
The awards were created by the Southwestern faculty in 1999 to recognize faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching. Nominations for the award are submitted by students in the spring semester, with selection of the recipients conducted by the Honorary Degrees Committee.
