MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR FORMER SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT DURWOOD FLEMING SET FOR MARCH 29
Georgetown (Texas) A memorial service for former Southwestern University President Durwood Fleming has been set for Thursday, March 29 at 11 a.m. in the Lois Perkins Chapel. Fleming died Jan. 22 at the age of 92.
Fleming served as the 12th president of Southwestern from 1961 to 1981. During this period, the University's enrollment grew from 691 to 1,000 students. Fleming oversaw the integration of Southwestern, the opening of a coeducational dormitory, and the construction of many new residential buildings, several of which are still used today. He also deepened Southwestern's liberal arts orientation and improved the quality of its faculty.
A native of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Fleming attended Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University and was ordained a minister in the United Methodist Church in 1940. After working at several small churches, he helped establish St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Houston, one of the leading churches in Methodism.
Fleming's contacts in Houston greatly aided Southwestern after he became president.
During Fleming's tenure, Southwestern's endowment grew from $5.25 million to more than $35 million, largely due to gifts from the Brown Foundation of Houston. These gifts helped created numerous new endowed chairs and professorships, initiated the Brown Scholars Program for students, and created the Brown Symposium, which is now in its 29th year.
Speakers at the memorial service will include Fleming's son, Jon H. Fleming; Southwestern University President Jake B. Schrum; and former University Chaplain Farley Snell. Music will be provided by organists Robert Bennett and Ellsworth Peterson as well as the University Chorale under the direction of Kenny Sheppard.
For more information, contact the University Chaplain's Office at 512-863-1527.
