Eight business students from Southwestern University will be participating in the 2005 Business Ethics Match Oct. 28 at the Renaissance Worthington Hotel in Fort Worth.

The competition, hosted by the Texas Independent College Fund (TICF), will include 18 of Texas' small, independent (private) colleges and universities. Southwestern is fielding two teams for its first-time participation in the event.

In the Ethics Match, each team will compete in four rounds of one-hour debates on topics that include drug marketing, employee theft, truth in advertising, accepting gifts, competitive bids, HR practices, insider trading and sales practices. The debates are built around 12 case studies, eight of which students will receive beforehand. The competition provides students the opportunity to show their reasoning skills through debating current issues in business ethics.

Southwestern's team consists of members of Mary Grace Neville's "Business Ethics and Social Responsibility" class, which aims to challenge students' assumptions about business practices and social responsibility. Neville served as a moderator for the competition last year.

"We are extremely pleased to have Southwestern represented in the competition this year," said TICF President Marcia Hawkins. "It will be a wonderful event, and a great opportunity for business leaders who serve as judges to see, first hand, the quality of students attending our private Texas colleges."
