Southwestern is the first university in Texas to offer a free bicycle program.
'PIRATE BIKES' MAKE CAMPUS DEBUT

September 20, 2005

Students at Southwestern University don't have any more excuses for being late for class.

A fleet of 30 shiny new yellow bicycles is now available for students to ride anywhere on campus.

The bicycles were purchased with the assistance of Heidi Meyer Curry, whose brother, Walter P. "Wally" Meyer, died in 2004 following a bicycle accident in Austin. Meyer was an Austin native and a 1986 graduate of Southwestern.

"My brother loved to ride," Meyer said at a ribbon-cutting ceremony held outside the McCombs Center Sept. 20. "I wanted to do something to keep his memory and spirit alive." The new "Pirate bikes" all have stickers on the back that say "In memory of Wally Meyer '86 and his zest for life and cycling."

Students eagerly took off on all the bikes as soon as they were dedicated. If the program is successful, the bikes will be made available to students, faculty and staff for off-campus use as well.

Southwestern is the first university in Texas to offer a free bicycle program.
