HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF UPDATE

The Southwestern University community welcomes four new visiting students into our campus community, three from Tulane University and one from Loyola University. Students, faculty and staff continue to provide information on ways to support the hurricane relief efforts, which we will share through regular communications on this page.

Your Assistance
In order to support faculty, staff and students in their efforts to provide assistance through various organizations offering relief support, Southwestern University is authorizing up to two days of paid leave for staff members and up to two days of approved absences from classes for faculty and students. Staff members must schedule their leave time through their supervisors. Faculty should coordinate their absences with their respective department chairs. Finally, students should work with their respective faculty members to ensure that all work missed during their absence is completed in a satisfactory manner. Students should not plan to be absent from classes on days when exams are scheduled.

Dillard University
Southwestern will focus long-term support and assistance to Dillard University, located in New Orleans, a sister United Methodist college and one of Southwestern's partner institutions in the Mellon Project. Read the most recent message from Dillard. Dr. Ron Swain will be Southwestern's contact person with both Dillard University and also with the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation. UMHEF is a 41-year old organization providing scholarship aid for United Methodist students attending 123 United Methodist-related institutions.

Support from Southwestern Students
A table will be set up throughout this week in the McCombs concourse from 11am-1pm where donations - monetary, clothing, and non-perishable food items - can be provided for Hurricane Katrina relief. Monetary donations will be forwarded to the American Red Cross. Clothing and food will be delivered to Houston to directly aid victims. Bring these items to the McCombs Campus Center or for pick up assistance or for additional information. To date, over $1,500 has been raised. Thank you.

Student Congress will devote its first Town Hall meeting, September 20, 11am-noon to Hurricane Katrina relief. Information will follow.

Support from Alumni
Click on Southwestern's Alumni site to read messages from former students affected by Hurricane Katrina. Day of Service, the annual volunteer event whereby alumni and current parents gather to help their communities improve the human condition, will devote their efforts this academic year exclusively to Hurricane Katrina relief.

Support from The United Methodist Church
The churches and institutions of The Texas Annual Conference (greater Houston area) of The United Methodist Church have committed to raising one million dollars to feed displaced citizens currently located in the George R. Brown Convention Center, the Astrodome and shelters around Houston. Southwestern University will provide $25,000 toward this effort. Katrina's impact on Williamson County
University Chaplain, Dr. Beverly Jones will represent Southwestern University today, Wednesday, September 7, 3:30-5:30 pm for a conversation between area city managers and planners, county commissioners and area non-profit organizations.

What you can do
Volunteer opportunities added today to Southwestern's list, What You Can Do, include the United Way of Williamson County, Katrina Help Austin and Austin Dog Events.
