SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY APPROVES LIVING/LEARNING COMMUNITIES

April 11, 2005

In the 2005-2006 academic year, Southwestern University will implement a pilot Living/Learning Community program for several of its First-Year Seminar courses. First-Year Seminar courses are required for all first-year students during their fall semester.

Students who opt-in for the Living/Learning Community program will have the opportunity to live in same-sex "clusters," comprised of fellow students from their respective seminar courses. These students will live in an upper-level dormitory comprised of quads and suites. This type of living structure facilitates a more relaxed living and learning environment.

These Living/Learning Communities are designed to increase connection opportunities for students, while fostering an element of intellectual curiosity within the residence hall experience. By further encouraging the discussion and pursuit of academic topics beyond the confines of the classroom, the program also gives students more occasions in which to share in common intellectual growth and make connections between scholarly ideas and their practical implications.
