Former Prime Minister of Pakistan to Speak at Southwestern

February 17, 2005

Benazir Bhutto, former prime minister of Pakistan, will be Southwestern's 2005 Roy and Margaret Shilling lecturer. She will speak at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 10, in the Corbin J. Robertson Center on the Southwestern Campus. Elected in 1988, Bhutto was the first female prime minister in the Muslim world.

Prior to her election as prime minister, Bhutto served as leader of the Pakistan People's Party. Her first term as prime minister ended with the unconstitutional dismissal of her government after 20 months in office. Successful leadership of opposition in the National Assembly led to re-election as prime minister in 1993. Her government was again unconstitutionally dismissed three years later.

Bhutto is the author of Foreign Policy in Perspective (1978) and her autobiography, Daughter of Destiny (1989). Educated at Harvard's Radcliffe College and Oxford University, she received the Bruno Kreisky Award for Human Rights in 1988 and the Honorary Phi Beta Kappa Award from Radcliffe in 1989.

The Roy and Margaret Shilling Lecture Series was endowed by The Brown Foundation, Inc., of Houston, to honor Southwestern's 13th Presidential couple for 19 years of service to Texas' First University. The intent of the lecture series is to present internationally prominent speakers on topics relating to ethics, public service and public policy. Past speakers have included Bill Moyers, Jimmy Carter, Marian Wright Edelman, William Sloane Coffin, John McGuire, Karen Hughes and The Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Tickets are $10 and available to the public. Proceeds benefit the Roy and Margaret Shilling Library Enrichment Fund at Southwestern. Please call (512) 863-1483 to reserve tickets for this event.
