Southwestern Lecture Addresses Gender and Ethnicity in the Media

Southwestern University welcomes Sut Jhally to campus to present "Tough Guise: Violence, Media, and the Crisis of Masculinity" at 4 p.m. Thursday, Mar. 21, in the F.W. Olin Building, Room 105. This free public lecture is part of Southwestern's Jessie Daniel Ames Lecture Series, sponsored by the Feminist Studies Program.
Jhally, a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, specializes in gender, race, and ethnicity issues in the media and advertising. Jhally's lecture will incorporate reflections about gender and ethnicity in media coverage surrounding the events of Sept. 11. Jhally serves as executive director of the Media Education Foundation, a non-profit organization in Northampton, Mass., that produces educational videos on similar issues.
Jessie Daniel Ames (1883-1972), was a noted women's suffragist and social reformer who had important ties to Williamson County. In 1919, Ames was the first president of the Texas League of Women Voters. She accepted leadership roles in several statewide organizations including the Texas Committee on Prisons and Prison Reform and the state affiliate of the American Association of University Women. She served as a delegate-at-large to the 1920 and 1924 Democratic National Conventions.
