Attorney John Nechman to address the effects of globalization on GLBT immigration

February 13, 2002

John Nechman will speak on "Love Knows No Borders: The Effects of Globalization on GLBT Immigration" at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb 20, in the Caldwell-Carvey Foyer of the Alma Thomas Fine Arts Center at Southwestern University. The event is sponsored by ALLIES, a campus support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons. The community is encouraged to attend.

Nechman will address the phenomenon of local cultures communicating more closely, and in particular, how differing attitudes toward sexual identity affect immigration between particular countries.

An active member of the Houston Bar Association, American Immigration Lawyers Association and numerous other legal groups, Nechman was born in South Korea, but has been a resident of the Houston area since 1971. After spending several years living and traveling in Europe, Asia and Latin America, he worked for the law firm of Ritchie & Glass. He started his own practice this year, focusing primarily on immigration law and international business transactions. Since 1996, he also has been an English writing instructor at two local colleges. He currently serves as president of the Stonewall Lawyers Association of Greater Houston.
