Lesléa Newman to give public reading on February 26
February 11, 2002
Lesléa Newman will give a free public reading, titled "You Can't be a Lesbian, You're Jewish," at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the Mood-Bridwell Atrium on the Southwestern University campus. A book signing and reception will follow. The English Department's Howard Crawford Lecture Series sponsors Newman's visit.
Newman is a prolific, multi-genre writer who describes her general thematic concerns as being "lesbian identity, Jewish identity, and the intersection and collision between the two." Her short story "Letter to Harvey Milk" is widely anthologized. She also has written "The Babka Sisters" and "Whatever Happened to Baby Fane." She uses the language and customs of Jewish life to imagine lesbian lives with Yiddish roots that can embrace interfaith and intercultural relationships.
This lecture is funded by the Claud Howard and Elizabeth A. Crawford Endowment Fund, established by the estate of Elizabeth A. Crawford, Southwestern University Class of 1934 and daughter of the late Claud Howard, former Southwestern professor of English. The endowment supports visiting scholars in the Department of English and student scholarships.
