Southwestern University's Fleming Lecture Series in Religion Discusses "Religion and Ecology: Buddhist, Native
American and Christian Perspectives"

Three diverse theologians will speak on Religion and Ecology Thursday, Feb. 28, as part of the Southwestern University Fleming Lecture Series "Religion and Ecology: Buddhist, Native American and Christian Perspectives." The lectures are free and open to the public and will be held in the Linda McCombs Room of the Red and Charline McCombs Campus Center.
Rosemary Radford Ruether will speak on "Christianity and Ecology: Conflict or Compatibility?" at 9:30 a.m. Ruether is the Georgia Harkness Professor of Applied Theology at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and is among the most widely read feminist voices in the world. She has written and edited more than thirty books and hundreds of articles and reviews. Her work explores how Christian Theology has been biased by the exclusion of women's experiences and seeks to shape an inclusive theology.
Ines Talamantez, professor of religious studies at the University of California-Santa Barbara, will present "Native American Religious Traditions and Ecology" at 1 p.m. Talamantez also has been Senior Fellow at the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University since 1991. She specializes in Native American religious studies and philosophies, Native American literature, comparative literature, ethnopoetics, oral traditions, translation theory, anthropology of religion, religion and healing, Chicana/o Studies, Mexican culture, and women and religion.
Stephanie Kaza, associate professor of religious studies and environmental studies at the University of Vermont, will expound on her ideas about "How Much is Enough? A Buddhist Wrestles with Consumerism" at 2:30 p.m. Kaza also serves on the board of directors of the Center for Respect of Life and the Environment and is chair of the board of directors for the Buddhist Peace Fellowship.
The Lurlyn and Durwood Fleming Scholars are invited to the Southwestern campus through an endowment established by St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Houston in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Fleming. Dr. Fleming, distinguished President of Southwestern University from 1961 until 1981 and chancellor in 1982, was the founding pastor of St. Luke's UMC.
