Southwestern University Celebrates Black History Month With Films, Conversation and Community Service

Southwestern University will celebrate Black History Month with a variety of activities that are open to the public.
A series of films will be screened throughout the month, sponsored by the student group, Ebony, and facilitated by Assistant Professor of Communication Julie Thompson. The films, which will begin each evening at 7 p.m. in the media room of the McCombs Campus Center, include: "Ethnic Notions" on Feb. 7; "Color Adjustment" on Feb. 14; "Hollywood Shuffle" on Feb. 28; and "Bamboozled" on March 7.
Ebony also will sponsor poetry nights with the theme, "Gravediggin' Poets: diggin' up the mental dead," at 9 p.m. in the Korouva Milkbar on Southwestern's campus Feb. 13 and 20.
A community service project to collect goods for My Sister's Closet will be held in conjunction with Southwestern's Gender Awareness Committee and Alpha Phi Omega the week of Feb. 25 - March 1.
Finally, Southwestern's Diversity Enrichment Committee and Ebony will hold a Black History Month dinner in the ballrooms of the McCombs Campus Center the evening of Feb. 26. The dinner will feature guest speaker Gail Beard, Southwestern class of 1972, and the music of the Southwestern Gospel Choir.
