January 9, 2002
Southwestern University's Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee will host the Martin Luther King, Jr. Week of Celebration Jan. 21-25, 2002. This year's theme: "Continuing the Dream: Learning and Living Peace and Nonviolence."
The week of events will kick off Monday with a commemorative march and conclude Friday with a community service project for Habitat for Humanity. Throughout the week, Southwestern will host a series of lectures and teach-ins by professors, choral performances by local church choirs, a special chapel service, a poetry night sponsored by the student organization Feminist Voices, and performances by guest artists New Arts Six, Marian Barnes and Joanie Barnes Stewart.
New Arts Six is a Dallas-based vocal group formed by six women who saw the need to revitalize the musical legacy of African Americans. They will perform and share the importance of preserving the cultural legacy of the spiritual at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Alma Thomas Theater.
Marian Barnes and Joanie Barnes Stewart are an award-winning mother and daughter storytelling team from Austin. Marian was commissioned "Yellow Rose of Texas" by Governor Ann Richards in 1994 and named an "Honorary Storyteller of Austin" by Mayor Lee Cook in 1989. A retired counselor with a master's degree in counseling and human relations, she has told stories on four continents. Joanie is a lawyer and third generation storyteller who creates dramatic characterizations with her exciting and fun-filled presentations. They will share stories about the civil rights movement at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Caldwell-Carvey Foyer of the Alma Thomas Fine Arts Center.
