Dancers, Mariachis and Authentic Mexican Food Highlight Southwestern's El Diez y Seis de Septiembre Celebration

September 12, 2000

Southwestern University Hispanic student organization Latinos Unidos will sponsor a celebration of El Diez y Seis de Septiembre, Mexico's official independence day, from 12-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, on Southwestern's campus.

The entire Georgetown community is invited to attend the festivities, which will begin at noon in the Alma Thomas Theater with featured speaker Ernesto Nieto, founder of the National Hispanic Institute. His speech will be followed by a performance of Balet Folklorico dancers from the Hispanic Parents in Action group.

Everyone will then head to the Mood-Bridwell Atrium at 2 p.m. for free authentic Mexican food and mariachi music. Activity booths will be set up around the Academic Mall at 3 p.m. and will include face painting for children. All events are free to the public.
