Southwestern University Honors Martin Luther King, Jr. with a Day of Celebration and Education

Southwestern University joins in the celebration and remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Monday, Jan. 17, with a series of day-long events on the University campus.
This year's theme: "Live the Dream. Everyday."
Festivities will kick off with a reception at 9 a.m. in the Bishops Memorial Lounge of the Red and Charline McCombs Campus Center. A birthday celebration will follow at the Lois Perkins Chapel at 10 a.m. with greetings, music, and guest speaker Kathy Obear, who will commemorate King's legacy. Obear is an independent development consultant specializing in diversity and change management. At 11 a.m., the McCombs Campus Center will host a screening of "Freedom on My Mind", the Academy Award nominated documentary that tells the story of the Mississippi freedom movement of the 1960's.
Throughout the afternoon, concurrent lectures on topics such as "Activism and Dealing with Triggers" and "From Banya to Baptist: Gandhi and MLK, Jr.," will be given on campus by Obear and various Southwestern professors. The ceremonies will conclude with an "Awareness to Action" meeting at 4 p.m. in the McCombs Campus Center.
