HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF UPDATE
The Southwestern University community continues its outreach to persons affected by Hurricane Katrina:

APPROVED ABSENSES FOR VOLUNTEERING
In order to support faculty, staff and students in their efforts to provide assistance through various organizations offering relief support, Southwestern University is authorizing up to two days of paid leave for staff members and up to two days of approved absences from classes for faculty and students. Staff members must schedule their leave time through their supervisors. Faculty should coordinate their absences with their respective department chairs. Finally, students should work with their respective faculty members to ensure that all work missed during their absence is completed in a satisfactory manner. Students should not plan to be absent from classes on days when exams are scheduled.

CAMPUS SUPPORT

SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY LIBRARY COLLECTING CHILDREN'S BOOKS FOR DISTRIBUTION TO KATRINA FAMILIES
Beginning this Friday, Sept. 23, staff members in the Southwestern University Library will be collecting new and "gently used" children's books for distribution to Katrina families in Central Texas. Anyone wishing to donate books may bring them to the Smith Library Center Circulation Desk. Donated books can cover a wide age span, from those aimed at very young pre-school age children through young adult titles. Those who do not have personal access to children's books are welcome to bring new books or write a check so the library can purchase a book in their name. The Southwestern University Education Department is collaborating on this project, and will be working with some of the local public schools to involve parents and children in the program. "Books can provide therapy, inspiration, escape, consolation and information for children and parents to share in times of crisis," says Lynne Brody, dean of library services. For more information on the project, contact Brody at 512-863-1214 or .
