WHAT YOU CAN DO
Below is a listing of agencies through which members of the SU
community can assist with the relief efforts related to Hurricane
Katrina. If you or your organization would like assistance in
creating your own relief effort, please ,

Katrina Welcome Center - The Caring Place needs volunteers to work at the Katrina Welcome Center in Georgetown, which is housing eight displaced families. Volunteers are needed to work in the play room, supervise outdoor activities for older children, provide transportation to stores and staff the information desk. To volunteer, contact Holly Doggett at 869-4735.
Georgetown Animal Shelter - Volunteers from Georgetown are taking care of 15 dogs and 15 cats at the old Georgetown Animal Shelter. More animals may be brought to Georgetown after these animals are brought back to health and placed in homes. Volunteers are needed to pick up animals and care for them. American Red Cross Donations made to the Hurricane 2005 Relief Fund
will provide emergency shelter, food, water and other critical
assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina. To make a donation,

American Second Harvest (ASH) The national network of food banks is in
need of financial donations to support at least 10 food banks and
hundreds of related agencies affected by Hurricane Katrina. Funds
will enable transportation of food to victims and will secure
additional warehouse space to assist member food banks in resuming and

Austin Dog Events - Austin Dog Events is assisting evacuees and their pets in the Austin area. Email txfederation@austin.rr.com with your contact information to let them know your skills, such as
grooming or medical experience or if you're interested in watching dogs. The Burger Center has an outdoor shelter for animals housed in crates or cages and is providing pet food. Contact Pat Nordyke at the above email address if you are willing to house animals for evacuees, donate supplies or money, or would like to assist in other ways.
Catholic Charities USA around the nation are poised
to send assistance teams to help the local Catholic charitable
organizations in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. Financial
donations will fund both emergency relief efforts as well as long-term
services beyond food and water such as job placement, counseling and
medical prescription drug coverage. For more information visit

Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) ERD provides emergency assistance
to children and families affected by disasters such as Hurricane
Katrina. ERD has already sent funds to the Diocese of Mississippi to
help vulnerable people whose homes were destroyed or severely damaged
and has offered funds to the Dioceses in Alabama and Tennessee and is
working to determine the need in Louisiana. For more information or

Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) The Humane Societys
Disaster Relief Fund supports disaster relief teams providing vital
aid to animals and pet owners devastated by storm damage and flooding.
A multiple state relief effort has been launched to rescue animals
and their care-givers in affected areas. All donations will support
disaster relief animal work. For more information or to donate visit

Katrina Help Austin - Katrina Help Austin is a volunteer organization started
on private initiative but now working in tandem with more established
organizations, like the Red Cross, and coordinating things with the
people at the Austin Convention Center. The main task of this group
is helping displaced people find temporary housing in the Austin
area, but- they've also been distributing water, food, clothing,
toiletries and other supplies to people, as well as helping people
who got out early and have been in local hotels for the last week and
are now running out of money. They need any and all volunteers to do
a variety of tasks: Go to 2408 S. 3rd Street, Apt. F.

KVUE TV - KVUE is partnering with local Randalls stores to raise money
for hurricane relief. Starting today you can donate a dollar or more
at the register. Randalls will add the donated amount to your grocery
bill and give 100% of your donation to the American Red Cross Disaster

Mobile Loaves & Fishes (MLB) MLB is responding to the crisis in New
Orleans and the dire need for food and water to sustain the refugees
being evacuated. MLB has arranged for a tractor trailer full of ice,
food, water, basic first aid materials and love to those in the
impacted area and beyond. MLB is in need of money to purchase these

Salvation Army USA The Salvation Army is currently providing services
to storm victims and first responders in the Gulf Coast States. A
$100 donation to the Salvation Army will feed a family of four for two
days, provide two cases of drinking water and one household clean-up
kit, containing brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning supplies. Please

St. Luke United Methodist Church in Houston (3471 Westheimer) is
coordinating volunteers to help staff the Astrodome. They expect to
need hundreds of volunteers willing to work 12 hour shifts for at
least a month. Two people can team to work six hours each, but those
persons need to volunteer as a pair. Please contact Susan Silvus

to volunteer.
The Storehouse in Georgetown (2102 N. Austin Ave. across from the
Georgetown High School) is receiving clothing, food, water and
supplies to distribute to persons who are coming to Georgetown and
Austin area as refugees from the hurricane and to other sites as
needed. Items may be taken directly to the Storehouse. For more

Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) The Union for Reform Judaism has opened
a disaster relief fund to aid those communities and URJ congregations
affected by Hurricane Katrina. 100% of all donations made (minus
credit card fees) will be forwarded to appropriate relief agencies.

United Way of America - The United Way Hurricane Katrina Response Fund
has been activated to help affected communities begin rebuilding their
lives. All donated funds will be allocated to front-line disaster
relief and long term recovery needs as determined by local United Way
offices in coordination with a vast network of human services agencies

United Way of Williamson County - The United Way of Williamson County believes the best course of action is to provide the tools and resources necessary to assist organizations who know how to respond to a disaster of this magnitude.
