Su-b33salon3 -- Mailing list for conversation among conversants in Salon 3

About Su-b33salon3
English (USA)

Salon 3 of Think -- Converse -- Act is devoted to the wide-ranging and often difficult issues raised by intersections and conflicts among ethics, the arts, and public policy. Among other things, these intersections come into play as one considers the matter of illegal and illicit practices in the arts -- ranging from unlicensed downloading of music and video to forgery of works by master artists and theft of valuable artistic items from museums and archaeological sites. These practices are closely bound up with a wide range of other crimes such as drug trafficking, prostitution, and theft: despite significant differences in the clientèles for these crimes, at the infrastructure / financier level the perpetrators are virtually indistinguishable. The latter group (drug trafficking etc.) figures prominently in political discourse, while the former group is, at best, obscure in that same discourse. The question thus emerges: what compromises does the artist, musician, or historian of any of the arts have to make in order to engage the resources of politics in discouraging and prosecuting such illicit practices?

This mailing list is intended to provide a forum for you to begin conversing about these or any related issues before the official beginning of Brown Symposium XXXIII. Put your ideas out there today!
