Alumni Letter

I want to see you! Please join me.

Last year, it was my privilege to travel around the nation and talk to hundreds of Southwestern University alumni. In those meetings, I asked a simple question, “What would you like for The Association of Southwestern University Alumni to be?” It proved to be a provocative and stimulating question. Invariably, the small groups that I met with would talk for hours sharing ideas.

After those meetings, the ideas that came out of them were shared with the Alumni Council, Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations Georgianne Hewett ’90, President Jake Schrum ’68, Board Chairman Merriman Morton ’63 and many others. The result was that the initiatives, budget and priorities of The Association were changed to reflect what the alumni want. Some of the recommended changes occurred immediately. The Alumni Hospitality House was open for all alumni during Homecoming and Reunion Weekend with snacks and the beverage of one’s choice. (Yes, that is correct.) Alumni also expressed a desire to be connected with Southwestern where they live. As a result, the formation of local associations of Southwestern alumni has become the top priority of The Association. By this summer, there should be at least six organizations formed and functioning. It is our hope that there will be about 25 local associations all over the nation in the near future. Alumni will be able to go to these locations and immediately have a network of Southwestern friends with whom they can connect. To support all these efforts, we are pleased to be adding another staff member to the Office of Alumni Relations.

We want to continue to be an alumni organization that is what its members want it to be. The best way I know to accomplish this is to keep listening to alumni. In 2007, I hope to visit 27 cities to meet with alumni and continue the conversation. What do you want your alumni organization to be? Thus, I return to my opening invitation. Please come be a part of the discussion in the city nearest to you. The schedule for these meetings appears on the facing page. Please contact the Office of Alumni Relations and reserve your place at the meeting nearest you.
