Thinking Ahead: The Southwestern Campaign
On March 31, 2006, Southwestern University kicked off Thinking Ahead: The Southwestern Campaign in an effort to raise $125 million by June 30, 2009.
Guided by and in support of the goals of the Strategic Plan for 2010, this comprehensive campaign is developing resources for the support of Southwestern students and faculty, to enrich the diversity of our community and in furtherance of our living/learning environment.
The Thinking Ahead campaign marks a pivotal moment in the history of Southwestern University. Achieving distinction among the nations premier liberal arts institutions will require the collective efforts of Southwesterns community of faculty, staff, alumni, parents and friends. The King Creativity Fund allowed me and two of my closest friends to experience something most people only see on the news. Traveling to New Orleans to interview those affected by Hurricane Katrina and personally witnessing the rebuilding of such an historic city was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It was a very rewarding experience and it is great to know that we have brought our experiences back to Texas to share with the campus community through our documentary.

Looking back, I realize how much my professional development has been supported by the Cullen Faculty Development Fund and a Brown Distinguished Teaching Professorship. Thinking ahead, the next generation of Southwesterns faculty will require even more support, both because of their own scholarly ambitions and because of the high expectations of our students.

Im excited that Southwestern is moving forward to create a more diverse campus environment. Real life comes in many sizes, colors and belief systems. Enriching the diversity of the SU community will help students appreciate and understand these differences while teaching them to respect their own worth as well.

Southwesterns Living-Learning Communities are designed to increase connections between students, their peers and faculty. These connections foster an element of intellectual curiosity within the residential experience. As the focus of education at Southwestern shifts more toward Living-Learning Communities, appropriately designed residence halls, academic buildings and athletics facilities will provide an educational atmosphere that lends itself to personal development through more deliberate faculty/student contacts.

My relationship with Southwestern began more than 25 years ago when my daughter enrolled. The objectives of Thinking Ahead: The Southwestern Campaign build upon the Universitys reputation for offering students exceptional learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. Alumni, parents and other friends of Southwestern University have a responsibility to be builders of this great University and not simply caretakers of the status quo.
