Spanish Summer Instructor - Upward Bound Program

Southwestern University invites dynamic teachers to apply for the Spanish summer instructor position in its Upward Bound (UB) program, a U.S. Department of Education grant-funded position designed to offer an environment for increased secondary and post-secondary graduation rates to low-income and first-generation college bound, local high school students. Class size ranges from 10-15 students. Spanish classes are scheduled twice per week, June 9th-July 21st , from 9:00-10:00 a.m. on the Southwestern University campus. This position is a summer temporary appointment with the opportunity for renewal that reports to the UB Director.
Upward Bound is a federally funded, year-round, multi-year program designed for high school students who have the potential to succeed in college and could benefit from a broad base of support. UB Summer program is designed to provide academic enrichment while simulating a college-going experience. The overall goal of UB is to increase the rates at which UB students enroll in and graduate from institutions of higher education. UB serves a total of 50 students from Georgetown, Granger, and Jarrell High Schools. Students enter the program in 9th grade and continue through graduation from high school. Instructors are critical to the academic success of UB students and to the success of the program. Instructors are expected to develop curriculum and submit a class syllabus prior to the start of the UB Summer program; communicate clearly in oral and written form; teach core academic concepts; create an engaging and stimulating learning atmosphere; and supervise students during class time.
Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree with at least one year of teaching high school students with three years preferred.
