We’re so excited for The BIG Event 2017!
The BIG Event is a day of service each year that gives Southwestern University students, faculty, staff, & alumni the opportunity to spend a day volunteering with local nonprofits and community partners. It is organized by Sustain, an on-campus organization, and sponsored by local businesses.
The BIG Event aims to engage Southwestern students with the Georgetown community that surrounds and supports our university. The intent is three-fold:
- To raise awareness about a variety of social, political, and economic issues in Georgetown
- To strengthen partnerships
- To empower students to engage with their community
While The BIG Event is only a single day, we hope that it will support the development of a more sustained and active relationship between Georgetown and the SU campus.

Student commitment to sustainability secures Southwestern a spot in the Princeton Review’s Guide to Green Colleges
Lloyd Minick ’08 and Michael Hanan ’10 have an inspiring story of fraternity brothers turned business partners. Both active on campus in the Kappa Sigma fraternity, the two have now come together to start the urban farming company Ten Acre Organics, with the aim of creating sustainable farming practices with high yields in urban areas.
